What Uses Up Your Claude Usage Limit So Fast
- Claude's usage limit is not a message count. Anthropic says the messages you get vary with message length, including the length of files you attach, and with how long the conversation already is.
- On Anthropic's API, a PDF is the expensive way to hand Claude text. Counted with Anthropic's own token counter, a typical PDF cost close to three times its extracted text.
- To make the limit last: attach text instead of the PDF, keep files you reuse in a Project, start a new chat instead of stretching a long one, and check Settings > Usage before a big job.
You attached a report, asked three questions, and Claude says you have hit your limit until later today. It felt like three messages. To Claude it was the whole report, inside a conversation that grew with every question.

What counts against your Claude usage limit
Anthropic's advice on usage limits lists what spends the allowance: message length, file attachment size, current conversation length, tools such as Research and web search, the model, the effort level, artifacts, and multi-step tasks. The Pro plan page puts the first three in one sentence: the number of messages you can send "will vary based on message length, including the length of files you attach, the length of your current conversation, and the model or feature you use."
So the limit depends on how much Claude has to read and do, not on how many times you press send. A large attachment makes the conversation long from its first message, and everything you ask after it is asked inside that conversation.
On paid plans there are two clocks. A session limit resets five hours after your first message, and a weekly limit resets at a fixed time each week. Usage in claude.ai, Claude Code and Claude Desktop all counts against the same limit, according to Anthropic's limits article.

Why a PDF costs more than its own text
Through Anthropic's API, Claude reads a PDF twice over: the text of each page, and an image of each page. The image is charged whether the page holds a chart or three lines of text. We took 195 PDFs from the public web and counted the 165 with a text layer with Anthropic's token counter, once as a PDF and once as the text FileConcat extracts. The median file cost 2.81 times as much as a PDF as it did as text. The full method is in How many tokens is a PDF in Claude.
One file you can check yourself: the paper "Attention Is All You Need", 15 pages from arXiv.
The same paper counted both ways. As text it costs less than half as much.
Anthropic's token counting endpoint, claude-opus-5-5, 2026-11-05. Text is what FileConcat 2.13.0 extracts.
These counts come from Anthropic's API. Anthropic does not publish how the claude.ai apps weigh a PDF against your usage limit. Its upload help page says the apps read a PDF of 101 to 1,000 pages as text only. Read the counts here as the best available guide, not as the apps' own number.

How to make your Claude usage limit last longer
- 1
Attach the text, not the PDF
Drop the PDF into FileConcat, copy the extracted text, and paste it or attach it as a
.txtfile. The text loses the pictures. If your question is about a chart or a scanned page, keep the PDF. - 2
Put files you keep asking about in a Project
Anthropic says "Content in projects is cached and counts less against your limits when reused." The cache does not last forever: "Caches expire after a period of inactivity", so the first message after a long break counts the files in full again.
- 3
Start a new chat when the topic changes
Anthropic counts the length of the current conversation against your limit, so a long chat makes new messages cost more. Its own advice for a long chat near the limit is to try starting a new conversation.
- 4
Match the model and effort to the job
A lower effort level or a lighter model for routine questions leaves more of the limit for the hard ones. Turn off tools and web search a question does not need.
- 5
Check Settings > Usage before a big job
Paid plans show how much of the five-hour session and the weekly limit is used, and when each resets.
For a code folder the waste is different: lock files, vendored code, build output and test files. FileConcat's defaults leave out the ones they recognise by name, which removed a median of more than a fifth of the tokens from fresh clones of 60 public repositories.
The numbers will change, and so will the prices behind them. Much of your allowance goes on what Claude reads, so send the text your question needs and nothing else.

Frequently asked questions
Does file size count toward the Claude usage limit?
Yes. Anthropic lists file attachment size among the factors that affect your usage limits, beside message length and conversation length. A bigger attachment spends more of the limit.
Why did I hit the Claude usage limit after one prompt?
One prompt can carry a lot: a long PDF, a large pasted file, a research task or web searches, or a high effort level. On Anthropic's API a PDF is charged for an image of every page on top of its text, and the apps read the visuals of any PDF up to 100 pages.
When does the Claude usage limit reset?
The session limit resets in full five hours after the first message of the session. The weekly limit resets at a fixed day and time assigned to your account. Settings > Usage shows both.
Does starting a new chat reset the Claude usage limit?
No. The limit runs on the five-hour and weekly clocks. A new chat only makes the next messages cheaper, because the length of the current conversation is one of the things Anthropic counts.
Is pasted text cheaper than an uploaded PDF in Claude?
On the API almost always: 163 of 165 PDFs with a text layer counted fewer tokens as text. How the claude.ai apps count a PDF against the limit is not published, so treat the API figure as the best available guide, not as the apps' own number.
