Can I upload a folder to ChatGPT?

OpenAI's help pages describe no way to upload a folder from your computer; you attach the files inside it instead. The folder routes they describe go through connected apps, such as a Google Drive folder linked as a Project source or picked in Library. In our September 2026 test it went into a full Project without taking a file slot, but ChatGPT read it live when answering rather than from the Project's own files, and it skipped the archives inside the folder. A local folder or a ZIP has no such route, which is what this page is for.

Why one text file beats a ZIP.

A ZIP asks ChatGPT to unpack it before it can read anything, and that is the step the forum reports say fails. A text file skips it: the folder is already open, the documents are already text, and the paths are written out, so nothing depends on how ChatGPT handles archives that day.
