ChatGPT conversation too long? Carry all of it into a new chat.

When ChatGPT says you have reached the maximum length for this conversation, the new chat starts empty. FileConcat Clipper, a free Chrome side panel, reads the whole conversation and hands it back as one file you attach to the new chat, with its token count.

  • Every turn, not only the few on screen
  • No Plus plan needed, and it works in Claude or Gemini
  • Free, and nothing is uploaded to us

Why the new chat starts from nothing.

Clip it while it still opens

People on OpenAI's forum report old conversations that stop opening with "This conversation is too long, please start a new one." We have not tested the Clipper on one in that state.

A ChatGPT conversation can only grow so long. At the limit it stops taking messages and shows this, as quoted on OpenAI's forum:

You've reached the maximum length for this conversation, but you can keep talking by starting a new chat.

The new chat does not start with the old one's messages. Copying them across by hand fails quietly, because the page holds only the few messages near where you are looking and swaps the rest in as you scroll. Select all and copy, and most of the conversation is not there to copy.

Two ways to continue a conversation in a new chat.

ChatGPT has its own route on paid plans. The file works on any plan, in any assistant, and stays on your disk.

RouteWhat the new chat getsWhere it stops
Move the chat into a ProjectThe project's instructions and files; on Plus and Pro, ChatGPT can reference the project's previous chatsPlus and Pro for the chat history; a chat made with a GPT cannot be moved
Clip it into one fileEvery turn, attached to the new chat as a .txtThe file counts toward the new chat's length; OpenAI caps a file at 2M tokens

As of September 2026, from OpenAI's help center on Projects in ChatGPT and on file uploads. OpenAI does not publish how long a conversation may grow.

From a full conversation to a fresh chat.

  1. 1

    Open the conversation

On chatgpt.com, open the long conversation and the Clipper side panel. It offers Clip this conversation.

  2. 2

    Clip and send

The panel asks ChatGPT for the whole conversation, so nothing depends on scrolling. Send hands it to a fileconcat.com tab with its token count. Nothing is uploaded to us.

  3. 3

Start the new chat with it

Set Format to Plain, download the .txt and attach it to a new chat with a line like: this is our previous conversation, continue from the last turn. OpenAI lists TXT among the types it takes.

82 messages, 4 on the page.

We measured a 41-turn ChatGPT conversation on 2026-09-14. After it loaded, the page held 4 of its 82 messages. The clipping held all 41 turns, 201,838 characters, in one file.

Common questions.

What does "You've reached the maximum length for this conversation" mean?
ChatGPT caps how long one conversation can grow. Past that point you can keep talking only in a new chat, and the new chat starts without the old one's messages. OpenAI's help center does not publish the length, so there is no number to plan around.
How do I continue a ChatGPT conversation in a new chat?
Give the new chat the old one as a file. FileConcat Clipper, a free Chrome side panel, reads every turn of the conversation and sends it to fileconcat.com as one bundle. Set Format to Plain, download the .txt, attach it to the new chat and ask it to continue from the last turn.
Can I move the conversation into a Project instead?
Yes, and on Plus and Pro that is ChatGPT's own route: OpenAI's help center says a moved chat inherits the project's instructions and file context, and that ChatGPT can reference previous chats within a project for Plus and Pro users. A chat created with a GPT cannot be moved into a project. The file works on any plan, in Claude or Gemini too, and stays on your disk.
What if ChatGPT says "This conversation is too long, please start a new one" and the conversation will not open?
People on OpenAI's community forum report old conversations that stop opening with this message. We have not tested the Clipper on a conversation in that state, so we cannot say it reads one. Clip a long conversation while it still opens.
Will the file fit in the new chat?
The result screen shows the file's token count before you attach it. OpenAI caps a text file at 2M tokens. Reasoning and tool activity are left out unless you turn them on in the panel, because they make the file several times larger.
Does this work for Claude and Gemini conversations?
Yes. The Clipper offers the same on a Claude conversation page and a Gemini one, and a clipped ChatGPT conversation can be attached to a Claude or Gemini chat as easily as to ChatGPT.
Is my conversation uploaded anywhere?
Not to us. The extension asks chatgpt.com for the one conversation with your own signed-in session, keeps nothing, and hands the text to the fileconcat.com tab in your browser. The only upload is the file you attach to the new chat.

Clip the conversation before you start over.

What else the panel clips: FileConcat Clipper, and the reference. Attaching files instead? The ChatGPT file upload limit.
